LHJWL in the Community
Our past projects have included amenities to the sprayground and to the one mile loop trail which will be under construction in the spring. In our first five years we have donated over $200,000 to improvements and amenities at LH North Park.

In 2008 our project was the rejuvenation of the pond at LH North Rec Center. The pond restoration project fits in perfectly with previous LHJWL projects. Past projects have focused on a renewal at Lake Highlands North Park. First, we added amenities to the sprayground and this past year we raised funds to add amenities to the Loop Trail when construction begins in the spring. The pond continues the rejuvenation of the park. The pond provides a highly desired amenity to the park, both aesthetically and environmentally. LHJWL believes the park is the heart of our neighborhood, a great gathering place for the entire community and wonderful place for our children to play. This is the first project LHJWL is solely responsible for, financially speaking. We have set a big goal for ourselves, but with the support of the LH community the payoff will be well worth the effort. Our goal was to raise at least $60,000, but we exceeded our goal and raised $83,000!!! The money raised will be spent to dredge, build the dam, install stonework and an aerator. Some of you may remember the fishing tournaments and the Haunted Trail events; we look forward to new memories at the pond. It will be a wonderful enhancement to the trail.

The pond was once a vital part of the park. In the past, Haunted Trail events and fishing tournaments, among other things, were held there. LHJWL looks forward to seeing the children in our community create new traditions and memories centered around the pond.
Project for 2009
We have made plans to include a family picnic area, a shade structure over the playground and incredible landscaping including a small children's maze made out of bushes. All of this will be at the Lake Highlands North Park playground and property on the East side of the park.
Current Project for 2010
Our primary focus is a large art piece to hang prominently in the main hallway. This mural will highlight the wonderful neighborhood center of Lake Highlands North Park: a playground, sprayground, rec center, the pond fountain, the loop trail and a bit of the football stadium. Further amenities for the Center could include updated seating and furniture, new window coverings, and mechanical screenings for the roof.
How to support
There are three ways you can support our efforts to restore the pond.
1) Purchase a brick – order forms are on this website.
2) Sponsor Run the Highlands – The park and the rec center are the heart of our neighborhood and with all the improvements that have been made and will continue to be made, very soon there will be something new there for everyone in our community to take advantage of. Lake Highlands Estates Neighborhood Association recognized the impact the pond would make on the community and donated $2,500 to the project.
3) Register for the race – Mark your calendars for April 24th, 2010. You may register online through our website. |
