Philanthropy
With beautification of Lake Highlands as our focus, the Junior Women’s League aims to enhance the area’s landscape and pride with every annual project – which we have been accomplishing for the past seven years.
Last year, our group raised funds to create a trailhead that will proudly welcome visitors and residents to our neighborhood. The proceeds from Run the Highlands 2011, as well as additional donations will be used to research, build and maintain the trailhead in Lake Highlands. Further announcements about the location and design of the trailhead are forthcoming.
Our History of Philanthropy…
In 2005-2006, LHJWL planned two years of fundraising in order to add amenities to the popular Sprayground. Our organization was able to contribute $41,000 to create a state of the art sprayground with several “upgrades.”
In 2007, our project was to help fund the one mile Loop Trail that winds through the LH North Recreation Center grounds. The Loop Trail has been a popular trail to jog, walk, bike, or rollerblade for LH residents. We also used the funds to create a Trailhead to mark the Loop Trail starting point. Many residents have purchased bricks to honor someone.
In 2008, our project was the rejuvenation of the pond at LH North Recreation Center. LHJWL believes the park is the heart of our neighborhood, a great gathering place for the entire community and wonderful place for our children to play. This was the first project LHJWL was solely responsible for, financially speaking. With the support of the LH community we raised $70,000 to use toward this renovation. The money raised was spent to dredge, build the dam, and install stonework and an aerator. Some of you may remember the fishing tournaments and the Haunted Trail events; we look forward to new memories at the pond. It will be a wonderful enhancement to the trail.
In 2009, we raised funds for the renovation or provide updates to Fieldcrest Park. Items include a family picnic area, a shade structure over the playground and more seating. All of this will be at the Lake Highlands North Park playground and property on the East side of the park. Currently, the project is under development with the City of Dallas Parks and Recreation Department. A ribbon cutting ceremony and groundbreaking will be scheduled soon.
In 2010, the LHJWL raised funds to create and install large mural to be hung prominently in the main hallway of the newly renovated Lake Highlands North Recreation Center. This mural will highlight the wonderful neighborhood center of Lake Highlands North Park. Additionally, funds raised will go toward new amenities for the Center including updated seating and furniture, new window coverings, and mechanical screenings for the roof. Construction on the Center will begin in September 2010.
How to support
There are three ways you can support our efforts.
1) Purchase a brick – order forms are on this website.
2) Sponsor Run the Highlands 2012 – The park and the recreation center are the heart of our neighborhood and with all the improvements that have been made and will continue to be made, very soon there will be something new there for everyone in our community to take advantage of.
3) Register for the race – Mark your calendars for April 28th, 2012.
